As climate change worsens, punishing heat waves are becoming the norm across the Northern Hemisphere. For the cover of the July 27, 2026, issue, the artist Marcellus Hall portrayed the effect that global warming has on subway riders. “Anyone who’s taken the New York City subway on a ninety-plus-degree day knows the sauna-like quality that certain stations offer,” Hall said. “If only there were free towels available.”
